GARDENING TIPS & USEFUL LINKS

What I have learned in hindsight (...that means...a little late, but not too late!):

  • Don't over-head water your plants. It encourages fungicides to grow on the leaves like white powdery mildew. Water plants in the early morning. Use drip line watering systems or wicking beds as passive watering alternatives, connected to a rain water tank.

  • Pretty white butterflies in your garden are really Satan in disguise. They will destroy all your brassicas. My cat loves catching them. Use nets over your veggies.

  • Treat your nectarine and peach trees at the end of Winter to prevent Peach Leaf Curl., BEFORE the little buds form and first leaves appear

  • Grow lots of companion pest repellent flowers around your garden as hedges and scattered in between to prevent aphids attacks. Some are even edible.

  • A good soil mix for your garden's vegetable beds is 1/3 humus (blended compost - chicken/cow manure; mushroom compost; worm castings and wood blends); 1/3 peat moss or coir derived from coconut husks; 1/3 coarse vermiculite.

  • The picture above is NOT me. The family to the left is not my family!

  • Add Lime to your acidic soil (humus rich soils are usually acidic) and water it in to raise the pH level and allow plants to best take in nutrients from the soil. However, some plants prefer acid soils, such as watermelon, pumpkin, corn, beans, potatoes. Add sulfur to the soil here to acidify it.

  • Yellowing if leaves means you've overwatered. STOP. Wait 2-3 days to allow soil to drain. Browning of leaf tips means under watering.
